Run. Bike. Beer.

For One Night Only — Beer Beer Beer!

So what does one do after to dull the pain of a 20 mile run?  If it’s your birthday, you clearly go to Nook Bistro with good friends to celebrate!  And that’s just what Oli, Mark, Diana, Ravi, Mai, and me did on Monday night.

As the two or three followers of this blog know, I gave up beer till the marathon with two exceptions — the Palm Springs Century ride, and my birthday.  Since Mai is the best enabler I know, she made sure to hook me up with some nice beverages to get me started on my birthday.

This is a beer I’ve been wanting to try for a long time, and thankfully Mai got me the big bottle to share.  Needless to say, it was loverly — and not just because it was my first beer in a while.  It’s much more like a nice amber than most Belgians I drink, but it has that great complexity that comes from being a “living” beer that’s brewed in the keg.  It’s got a little hoppiness, but not too much, and a bit lower alcohol content than most so it wouldn’t get int he way of the main attraction for the evening — my long anticipated Coconut Porter and Pot Roast from Nook.

As usual, the fine folks at Nook didn’t disappoint.  The Pot Roast is one of my favorites, especially the current variety with a bit more kick in the sauce and bok choy to go along with it.  And who doesn’t love a Maui Coconut Porter?  Did I mention that it was no-corkage Monday, and with the koozie we were able to drink all this beer for free?  Good food and free beer — how can everyone not love this place?  And don’t get me started on the bread pudding, one of the best desserts in town.  How can people not love this place?

Not only was the food and beer great, but so was the company.  Especially when you’re like me, a lazy bastard, you need support to get through something like the marathon.  I couldn’t ask for better people to help me through this than the folks who I got to share my birthday dinner with, so thank you for all!

And because all of you out there should get something too, my wonderful wife Oli got me a great bday surprise, which I’ll be sharing with all my donors soon.  We’re over $2500 now, but with the marathon and the new fund-raising premium, let’s push it to $4K by the 1st!
